Installing security screens to aluminium window frames, there are a few operational styles of aluminium windows, a sliding sash style, double hung, louvre or awning/casement window.
There are essentially two ways to install security screens on aluminium windows. The first is directly on the window’s face, and the second is into the recess the manufacturer created to retain flyscreens or security screens.
An aluminium window screen can be fitted quite easily. We must first prove that it will maintain its integrity and that its function as a security screen isn’t compromised, hence it must be able to be fixed to prevent removal. If it’s simple for you to remove it, a trespasser will find it simple to remove it as well.
Suburban Security screens offer various types of premium window screens, 7mm diamond grill screens, Alu-Gard screens and Invisi-Gard screens. Our Invisi-Gard range is made of .316 marine-grade stainless steel mesh and Alu-Gard is made of a 1.6mm thick perforated aluminium sheet. Each of these screens includes a standard 11mm or 9mm outer frame that fits precisely where previous fly or security screens were.
What Rivets to Use When Installing a Security Screen
Given their 11mm or 9mm thickness, one approach is to rivet through this hollow 11mm or 9mm piece and into the exterior aluminium window frame. Face fixing is the easiest method. A 3mm diameter rivet with a grip range of 15 mm is optimal. Another approach is to screw the screens in from the internal side of the house.
A 3 or 3.5mm drill bit is used for drilling rivets. The amount of fixings needed depends on how much security is required. The standard recommendation depends on the type of style we use to fix a particular screen. It is not advisable to drill within 50mm of the corners, where they connect the horizontal widths to the vertical lengths.
Security Screws for Installing Security Screens
The use of a security-type screw is another method of fixing. These can occasionally be found at higher-quality hardware or locksmith supply stores. Some hardware stores also provide pan torx screws, which can provide an additional screw-type fixing alternative. These are specific screws that call for a unique driver bit. The head of the screw can also be drilled out to accommodate existing Phillips head screws and make removal more challenging.
Security Screens Are Fixed to Aluminium Windows Using Recesses
If feasible, it is advisable to use the existing recess given by the window manufacturer for the flyscreens or security screens when installing or fastening security screens to aluminium window frames. The majority of Suburban’s security screens are 11mm or 9mm thick. This means they are less flexible than fly screens, making security screens more difficult to install. The outer frame will be more challenging to fix because it is considerably stiffer with less flexibility than a fly screen frame. A face repair option should be taken into consideration if there is any ambiguity regarding the security screen’s capacity to flex.
Once the security window screens are in the window recess, pop rivets or internal screws are typically used to secure them. Either the internal or external of the screen can be used for this. Having it from the internal is obviously more aesthetically pleasing, and it is also the most secure alternative because the fixings are harder to meddle with from the outside.
